What began as an intimate night of music at the local kosher restaurant in Norfolk turned into a warm and meaningful moment for the Jewish community. Earlier that day, word came that Norfolk’s Mayor would be joining us and that evening, he arrived with his two sons and close friend Isaac Glasser, ready to experience the atmosphere and connect with the community.
The Mayor’s connection with Chabad of Virginia Beach began months ago, at a special gathering that brought the community together with local government representatives, in partnership with Combat Antisemitism, shortly after the tragic murder of two young men in Washington, D.C. He spoke alongside the Mayor of Virginia Beach and members of Congress. So, when long-time community friend David Brenner told him about this concert at the new kosher restaurant in his city, he was immediately interested and from there, the plan quickly took shape.
The evening was filled with inspiration thanks to Jewish artist Caleiv Jean from Atlanta, whose powerful story and unique music brought hearts together. Also joining the event was Ron Taylor, Chairman of the Hampton Roads Black Caucus and a long-time friend and supporter of the Jewish community, together with his wife standing in solidarity and support for all our community has faced in recent years.
Looking ahead, the next musical night in Virginia Beach is already on the calendar, with Mayor Bobby Dyer invited and expressing that he will attend if his schedule allows.
Our community is blessed to live in a region where mayors and public officials from across the political spectrum stand with us and support our rights. In times like these, that is no small thing. We will continue to appreciate this privilege, strengthen these bonds, and grow the Jewish community with mutual respect alongside our neighbors.
