A New Tradition at Maimonides Nursing Home: Connecting to the Community Through Jewish Cooking

ree

At Maimonides Nursing Home, Rabbi Meir has initiated a unique tradition that connects residents to their Jewish heritage through shared cooking experiences. Every Wednesday, he cooks traditional Jewish dishes with the seniors residents, sharing the stories and history behind each recipe.

This week, they prepared matzo ball soup together, discussing its significance during Passover and within Ashkenazi Jewry. Last week, they focused on spicy Moroccan fish, highlighting the tradition of eating fish on Shabbat.

The aim of this initiative is to strengthen the residents’ connection to their heritage through flavors, aromas, and stories, as has been customary for generations. The joint cooking sessions allow them not only to enjoy preparing food but also to reconnect with their cultural and religious roots.

If you are interested in volunteering and teaching the residents how to prepare your own kosher Jewish dish, you are welcome to join on Wednesdays. For more details, please contact Rabbi Meir.

Together, bringing the flavors of the past into the lives of today!
